Electric Bike Conversion Kit Buyers Guide

What to look for when buying an Electric Bike Conversion Kit?

Electric Conversion Kits

Just as the rise of the electric bike has grown over the past few years, so has the electric bike conversion kits. Now there are multiple ways you can transform your existing bike into a powerful machine. One of your options is to fit a powered wheel like the one you find on an electric bike. You only need to fit one to either the front or back of your bike.

You can also attach a drive unit under your bottom brack, or fit a motor to your rear wheel or seat. Fortunately, all of these options work on any frame of bike whether you have a hybrid, a mountain, road, or city bike.

We’re going to explore these 4 main different types of electric bike conversion kits to help you understand how exactly you can use these kits to change your bike’s power!

  1. Electric Bike Wheels

Changing one of your wheels to a powered wheel is what most people tend to do when using a conversion kit to make a powerful bike. All you need to do in order to to get an electric bike wheel is swap one of your normal wheels for one which contains a motor and battery. The additional of the wheels will enable you to cycle at up to speeds of 20-25mph. Most of these wheels are powered by 250 – 350-watt motor and often between 28 – 20 inch in diameter.

2. Mid Conversion

Otherwise known as Mid-Drive Conversion kit is what you’ll need if you’ve already bought a motor. A lot of bike shops are selling motors for your bike, but not explaining that this isn’t the full kit. If you’ve just bought a motor on its own, you’ll need to buy something with a mid-drive unit. This is why you will see lots of separately sold kits called mid-drive conversion kits. These are to be used alongside the motor. These kits are great for making your bike more stable at high speeds as they weight it down.

3. Friction Drive

Back in the 80s and 90s manufacturers created a box which fitted next to your wheels and powered up your bike via friction. The Friction drive Election bike conversion kits work on a similar basis but are a lot better at it. For a friction drive conversion kit you simply bolt it on to any bike, and you’ll be able to have electrically assisted power. Some friction kits even go underneath the bike and press a power roller against the rear wheel and can be controlled via a control unit on your handlebar or a smartphone app.

4. Concealed

If you want an electric bike that doesn’t scream ‘look at me, I’m barely using any energy to power this vehicle’ we suggest looking at the concealed electric bike conversation kits. Unless you’re planning to compete in races, in which case you should probably not add a concealed kit to your bike.

Nevertheless, if you’re looking for a way to add extra power to your usual bike, but don’t want the bulky and often quite ugly sight of a motor. There are electric bike conversion kits that can be hidden inside the frame of your bike. These motors are often 200 watts and are hidden in the bike’s seat tube. You’ll be able to stick the battery in your bottle cage and ride for up to 1 hour with powered assistance.

Electric bike conversion kits for folding bikes

Believe it or not, you can also get an electric bike conversion kit for your folding bike too! There are a number of conversion kits becoming available for your folding bike. They often power themselves using the electric wheel method.

Most electric wheel conversion kits will be suitable for your folding bike. You just need to make sure that they will fit the smaller frame. For instance, a 20inch electric wheel will most likely fit your new folding bike as opposed to the 28inch ones.
